About ERTL farm toys

Company history

Fred Ertl Sr. started casting toy tractors in his Dubuque, Iowa home in 1945, melting scrap aluminum in the family furnace. Production moved to Dyersville in 1959, and the town, now known as the Farm Toy Capital of the World, has hosted the National Farm Toy Show since 1978. ERTL builds its replicas under license from John Deere, Case IH, and other equipment makers. Racing Champions bought the company in 1999, and TOMY acquired its successor, RC2, in 2011.

From Blueprint Replicas to Precision Classics

ERTL's Blueprint Replicas are die-cast farm toys sold in boxes marked "Blueprint Replica". The archive lists 26 tractors, implements, and combines from Allis-Chalmers, Case IH, Ford, International Harvester, John Deere, and Massey Ferguson. A box with a stock number but no series name can be looked up with the identify tool. Precision Classics launched in 1990 with an unstyled Model A on steel wheels, and the archive lists 25 numbered releases through 2004. The archive also catalogs the Case IH Precision Series and the later Precision Elite and Precision Heritage lines.

Values and identification

Most ERTL collector models are out of production, so resale sets their value. A mint-in-box example with its inserts and paperwork sells for the most. The stock number and UPC on the box identify the exact release, and the identify tool looks up either number. Vintage pieces in the archive go back to the 1978 National Farm Toy Show exclusive.
